Report: Manchester United's Wayne Rooney expected to be fit for England’s Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro

The 25-year-old will most likely miss games against FC Basel and Norwich City this week but should recover from a tight hamstring in time for international crunch clash.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is fully expected to be fit in time to feature in England’s crucial Euro 2012 qualifier with Montenegro next week, according to The Times.

Rooney missed United’s 1-1 draw with Stoke on Saturday with a tight hamstring, and boss Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed he does not expect him to play any part in Tuesday’s evening’s Champions League clash with Swiss side Basel.

Sir Alex was less clear on whether the 25-year-old will be able to return in time for Norwich City’s visit to Old Trafford on Saturday, but regardless the injury is understood to be unlikely to keep him out of the trip to Montenegro next Friday.

Rooney has made a blistering start to the Premier League season and currently sits on top of the division’s scoring charts, having netted an incredible nine times in his first five matches.

He has scored a total of 11 times for club and country so far this term, and his presence would be a huge boost for England as they look to acquire the point they need to secure their passage to next summer’s European Championships as winners of Group G.

Barcelona's Pep Guardiola leaps to former president Joan Laporta's defense

The Catalans' head coach has offered his support to the man who appointed him to his current role in the summer of 2008.

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has taken the time to defend former club president Joan Laporta in the wake of criticism from his successor Sandro Rosell.

Rosell recently described the signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic during Laporta's spell in charge at Camp Nou as 'the worst transaction' in the history of the club, and blamed his predecessor for Barcelona's financial difficulties.

Laporta consequently refused to attend Saturday's meeting of the club's general assembly, and Guardiola has now defended the man who appointed him as coach of Barcelona in the summer of 2008.

"Laporta is suffering a lot and does not deserve it. I have a lot of affection for him. He took the club from a precarious situation and we owe him much because he did extraordinary things," Guardiola told Marca.

Rosell and Laporta worked together when the latter was Barcelona president, but their relationship has since turned sour.
